Backup and DR

Backup and DR in the Cloud

The on-demand and off-premise nature of cloud computing makes it ideal for disaster recovery (DR) and online data backup. Using a combination of cloud-based storage and compute services, Tech-1 Solution allows customers to safely protect and immediately restore access to digital information and systems on a 24x7x365 basis.

Restoration and Recoverability First

To successfully take advantage of cloud computing for data backup and disaster recovery, enterprises must select solutions that deliver:

  • Rapid RTO (Recovery Time Objective): “Restoration” and “recoverability” are all-too-unfamiliar words for most backup solutions. When moving backup to the cloud, it’s critical to choose a solution that makes restoration easy and minimizes the time to recovery.
  • Agentless Architecture: Whether backing up file servers or replicating entire environments, solutions that require installing agents on each protected resource add unneeded complexity.
  • Full Automation: The ability to “set it and forget it” is key when protecting data. Data should be incrementally backed up to the cloud without administrator intervention.
  • Disk Based w/ Deduplication & Compression: Disk has become the preferred backup target due to its faster backups and recoveries and greater resilience. Already cost-effective due to falling drive prices, deduplication and compression make disk-based backups even more so.
  • Reserved Capacity: The ability to rapidly recover to cloud-based systems is a great advantage of cloud computing for data backup and disaster recovery, but only if capacity is available. Enterprises should select a solution offering the option to reserve capacity for emergency restores.
  • Fully Testable: It is important to be able to test every aspect of your disaster recovery plan in advance on an actual disaster. Cloud offers an advantage here, and the best providers will make testing easy.

In addition to its many backup and recovery advantages, backing up to the cloud can offer value in allowing systems to be instantly cloned or duplicated for testing and troubleshooting purposes, or as an early step towards a full cloud migration.

Tech-1’s Solutions for Backup-as-a-Service and Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service

Tech-1 Solution offers a full complement of Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) offerings. Each of these offerings is supported by enterprise-class solutions and infrastructure and meets all of the best practices and requirements outlined above.

  • Backup-as-a-Service: Tech-1 Solution BaaS is an online data backup service that safely stores a company’s critical data offsite in the Tech-1 Solution cloud. Tech-1 Solution BaaS is powered by the same proven backup technology currently employed in Tech-1 Solution’s own IaaS platform, and allows for full backup of data and applications. The solution is fully automated, supports Windows and Unix (Linux?), and data is deduplicated and compressed to reduce the storage footprint.
  • DR as a Service: Tech-1 Solution DRaaS is a fully-integrated disaster recovery service that allows for the continuous backup of applications and data to the cloud and the rapid resumption of business using cloud-based resources. DRaaS replicates customer VM data to the cloud and includes reserved computing capacity ensuring that these VMs can be brought to an active state should a disaster be invoked.

Both the BaaS and DRaaS services are customized to each enterprise’s specific needs, and are supported by Tech-1 Solution’s expert integration team.
